Shipping Economics: Freight Rates, Bunker Costs & Time-Charter Equivalent
Estimate a dry-bulk voyage from sea days and the bunker cube rule to port costs, tiered canal dues, voyage P&L and TCE, find the best slow-steaming speed, settle laytime and demurrage, price container freight per TEU and put a carbon cost on CO₂: 8 graded labs with illustrative rates.

About this course
A shipping economics course that estimates one fictional dry-bulk voyage and a container service in a spreadsheet, for chartering, operations and ship-finance staff, maritime students and commodity traders. You turn nautical miles and knots into sea days with a weather margin, estimate the fuel burn at each speed with the cube rule and price the bunkers, build the port disbursement account and a tiered canal toll, turn freight, commissions and voyage costs into the voyage result and the time-charter equivalent (TCE) per day, find the slow-steaming speed with the highest TCE, settle laytime from a statement of facts into demurrage or despatch, calculate the cost per TEU, utilisation and break-even of a container loop and put an illustrative carbon price on the voyage's CO2 per tonne-mile. Illustrative rates, educational only. The first lab is free.
