Map & Compass Navigation: Scales, Grid References, Bearings, Declination & Slopes
Measure, convert and correct everything a paper map gives you on a fictional orienteering map: scales and areas, grid references, bearings from coordinates, true, grid and magnetic north, slopes from contours, pace counting, error cones and a navigation log, with every cell checked as you go.

About this course
This course turns map and compass work into spreadsheet calculations you can check. On a fictional orienteering map you convert map centimetres to ground kilometres and map areas to square kilometres, split 6- and 8-figure grid references into metres and build them back from GPS positions. You calculate bearings between controls with ATAN2 and MOD, update a drifting magnetic declination and convert between true, grid and magnetic bearings. You derive slope percentages and angles from contours, turn pace counts into a dead-reckoning position, size error cones and aim-off angles, and finish with a full navigation log and a position plot.
