About this course
An auto mechanic math course that works through the jobs of one fictional shop, Ridgeway Auto Service, in a spreadsheet, for automotive apprentices, technicians, service advisers and car enthusiasts. You calculate engine displacement from bore and stroke in cc, litres and cubic inches, turn swept and clearance volume into a compression ratio and size the chamber for a target ratio, convert a dyno torque curve into horsepower with torque × rpm ÷ 5252, N·m and kW, combine gear ratios and the final drive into road speed and cruise rpm, decode tyre size codes into diameter and speedometer error, convert mpg to L/100 km and price fuel per km, flag brake pads, rotors and tyres past the shop limit, and build a repair quote with labour hours, parts markup, shop supplies and tax. Fictional shop and illustrative values, with no vehicle or parts manufacturer affiliation. The first lab is free.
