Working with student data
- All data in this course is synthetic: Northbridge College and its students do not exist.
- Real student records are personal data, protected by law in most places (for example FERPA in the US or the GDPR in the EU and UK). Follow your institution's data-protection rules before you copy records into a spreadsheet.
- Work with pseudonymised IDs (S1001) instead of names wherever you can, keep files on approved storage only, and share aggregated results rather than row-level data.
- When you publish results by group, suppress small groups (many institutions hide any figure based on fewer than 5 or 10 students), so no individual can be identified.
Definitions to agree before you report
- Which sessions count as possible: are authorised absences (illness, appointments) included? Most official measures count all absences, authorised or not.
- Severe absence is a second, stricter flag in some systems, for example attendance below 50%.
- Report the numerator and denominator next to every rate, so readers can see how many students a percentage is based on.
