Nurse Staffing Budgets: Census, Workload, Hours per Patient Day & FTEs
Read a ward's census like a staffing planner, turn patient workload levels into care hours and staff per shift, track hours per patient day against target, convert hours into budgeted FTEs with non-productive time, build a census-based staffing grid, check a roster's RN gaps and skill mix, price overtime, bank and agency cover and split a labour-cost variance into volume, hours and rate – 8 hands-on labs on one hospital ward, with every cell checked as you go.

About this course
In this course you build a nurse manager's staffing workbook for a fictional 28-bed hospital ward, one checked formula at a time. You read the midnight census as average daily census, occupancy and an 80th-percentile core level, and turn patients by workload level into care hours, a workload index and staff per shift. You track hours per patient day against target, convert variances into FTEs and build next year's FTE budget with non-productive hours, a replacement factor and fixed posts. Then you build a census-based staffing grid with minimums, check a roster's RN gaps, skill mix and shift leaders with COUNTIFS, cost bank, overtime and agency cover and split the labour budget into volume, hours and rate variances.
