Mechanics of Materials: Stress, Strain, Beams & Safety Factors
Axial stress and strain, Young's modulus from a tensile test, thermal expansion, factors of safety, shear and bearing in pins, beam reactions and bending moments, bending stress and deflection checks: solve the core strength-of-materials problems in SI units in a live spreadsheet that checks every cell. Educational, not a substitute for design codes or an engineer's review.

About this course
A mechanics of materials (strength of materials) course that solves the core problems in SI units in a spreadsheet, for civil and mechanical engineering students, technicians and anyone revising for an exam. You calculate the stress and strain of six steel hanger rods, measure Young's modulus with SLOPE from a tensile test and draw the stress-strain curve, find elongations with PL/AE, thermal expansion and the stress in a restrained member, check six parts against a required factor of safety and find their allowable loads, calculate shear stress in single and double shear and bearing stress in pins and bolts, find the reactions of a simply supported beam and draw its bending moment diagram, compare bending stress M·c/I in rectangles and I-sections and check deflections against L/360. Educational only, not a design calculation and no substitute for design codes or an engineer's review. The first lab is free.
