Insurance Claims Reserving: Chain Ladder, Loss Ratios & IBNR
Loss, expense and combined ratios by line, cumulative triangles from incremental data, age-to-age factors, CDFs and ultimates, IBNR and case reserves, Bornhuetter-Ferguson, paid vs incurred chain ladder, tail sensitivity and discounting: 8 labs on one fictional insurer's motor book.

About this course
An insurance claims reserving course that estimates one fictional insurer's motor reserves in a spreadsheet, for actuarial students, insurance accountants and analysts. You calculate the loss, expense and combined ratio by line of business, turn incremental claims into a cumulative triangle and read the latest diagonal, calculate link ratios and compare volume-weighted, simple and latest-three-year development factors, chain them into cumulative development factors and project the ultimate claims of each accident year, split the outstanding claims into case reserves and IBNR, estimate IBNR with the Bornhuetter-Ferguson method from an expected loss ratio, compare the paid and the incurred chain ladder and explain where they disagree and test the tail factor before discounting the reserve with a payment pattern. Simplified, educational examples, not actuarial advice. The first lab is free.
