Machine Design by Hand: Stress Transformation & Mohr's Circle, Combined Shaft Loads, Von Mises, Fatigue & the Goodman Line, Shaft Sizing, Bearing Life, Gear Forces, Springs & Bolt Preload
Size the parts that make machines turn. You will rotate stresses and draw Mohr's circle, combine bending and torsion in a shaft, compare von Mises stress with a fictional yield strength, check fatigue with modifying factors and the Goodman line, pick the smallest shaft from a diameter grid, rate rolling bearings by life, follow torque through a gear pair, size a helical spring and turn tightening torque into bolt preload, with every cell checked as you go.

About this course
This course sizes the parts of a fictional conveyor drive, checked cell by cell. You rotate plane stresses into principal stresses, find the principal angle with ATAN and draw Mohr's circle. You combine bending and torsion in a shaft into the von Mises stress, correct an endurance limit with surface, size and reliability factors from lookup tables and calculate Goodman factors. You solve for the minimum shaft diameter and pick the next standard size, turn radial and axial loads into bearing life in hours, follow speed, torque and tooth forces through two gear stages, size helical springs and turn tightening torque into bolt preload and a separation load. A capstone finds the weakest element and the cheapest upgrade.
