Video Surveillance Storage & Bandwidth Sizing: Cameras, Bitrates, Motion Recording, Retention Days, Disks & Network Load

Size a camera system before you buy it. You will turn resolution, frame rate and fictional codec factors into bitrates, apply continuous vs motion-triggered recording, compute storage for the retention period, choose disks with redundancy, check the network load per switch and uplink, and compare system options by cost, with every cell checked as you go.

About this course

In this course you size a fictional video surveillance system step by step in a spreadsheet. You build a camera list and look up typical bitrates by resolution, scale them to the frame rate and apply codec and night factors. You turn continuous, motion-triggered and scheduled recording into gigabytes per day, multiply by the retention days and convert TB to TiB with headroom. You work out how many disks a redundancy layout needs and the cost per usable terabyte, check the load per switch and uplink, compare a cloud plan with a local recorder over five years and finish with a design sheet and a chart.
